Arts and Crafts Exhibition, Saturday, 27th July - Sunday 11th August to be held in Lee Memorial Hall from 11.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. each day. Come and visit us in our delightful village and browse a wide selection of beautiful arts and crafts, all created by local artists, with an opportunity to purchase unique and unusual items whether as a gift or as a treat for yourself!

Craft Group Don't forget, the Craft Group meets on Monday afternoons, 1.30 p.m. onwards - just an informal get-together to indulge yourself in your favourite craft. Members have recently been knitting for babies in Africa During the last year 277 vests, 49 teddies, 36 blankets, 134 hats, 14 pair; of booties, 14 pairs of mittens, 9 cardigans and 4 jumpers have been sent out to Africa and some of those came from Berrynarbor!

Macmillan Afternoon Tea

A Huge thank you to everyone who supported us at the end of September when we hosted a fund raising event for Macmillan at Lee, serving coffee, cream teas and delicious home-made cakes. There were local crafts for sale, a raffle and fun things to do for the children as well and it was lovely to see so many locals and visitors enjoying a chat over a cuppa and cream tea! We raised a fantastic £408.98 - thank you all so much, we could not have done it without your help!

British Red Cross

The Red Cross operating in the North Devon area is desperately short of volunteers and struggling to keep up with demand. The charity is appealing for people to help especially in the Ilfracombe area. Service Co-ordinator, Jen Kirk says, "We're actually having to turn people away. We don't ask for a huge time commitment from our volunteers and all expenses are paid so no one's out of pocket."

Care and Support Service volunteers offer practical support to people after a stay in hospital and can often prevent people going into hospital by offering similar support. The volunteers take clients home, settle hem in and help with such things as shopping or collecting prescriptions. The service is free but donations to the Red Cross are always welcome.

If you can help for just a few hours a month and really make a difference to some please contact Jen Kirk on [01271] 326662.

North Devon Theatres

On target to be the Queen's Theatre best ever Christmas Show - Robin Hood will be riding in to Barnstaple with much merriment and mirth from the 15th December. Based on the much-loved English folk tale, Robin Hood is to be an action packed show with stunning new costumes, fantastic live music, brand new script and the usual comedy mayhem you would expect from the Queen's Theatre Pantomime. Tickets are £12-£19, young person £11-£14.

Escape to the Country - On Tuesday, 13th September, two men with professional-looking camera and a microphone muffle were noticed in the Square photographing the bus stop and our awards' sign. They repositioned themselves, stood at the corner of Miss Muffet's, facing the Village, and shouted 'Action'; a couple began to walk up the hill towards them. Equipment, crew and couple repositioned, standing on The Globe's car park. As they were feet away I asked them what they were filming. 'Escape to the Country' was the reply. Their participation will be shown 'sometime next year'.

No date can be supplied by those interested viewers of this programme. The Beeb's Customer Services don't have the relevant schedule for that series yet. All they could advise was to wait and watch.

Another great night is expected when Barb Jungr, courtesy of Beaford Arts, takes to the stage of the Manor Hall and turns it into a candle-lit cabaret of love. Hot from New York, Jungr will give her unique rendition of an eclectic mix of popular classics including Dylan, Diamond, Cohen and more. Sea View [Newsletter No. 133] - Rosslyn Hammett has written to say that she understands that her father, Stanley Huxtable, was born there, but doesn't think that her family is the same as that in the article. She says her grandfather was William Henry and he farmed at Lower Rowes farm, where her aunt Florence Lilian was born, and then later at North Lee which he had bought from the Watermouth Castle Estates sale.

HI-DI-HI - Following its success with '"Allo 'Allo' and 'Dad's Army', Studio Theatre brings to the Landmark stage the well-loved characters from the popular holiday camp TV comedy 'Hi-Di-Hi', directed by Anne Bacon. See posh Cambridge professor Jeffery Fairbrother as he takes the reins at Maplin's Holiday Camp, closely watched by doleful Chief Yellowcoat Gladys Pugh, while working-class comic Ted and his hapless side-kick Spike dream up all kinds of mischief.

World's Biggest Coffee Morning - Berrynarbor joined this event, in a small way, on Friday 29th September at Cherry Hinton, Barton Lane. £75.30 was raised for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity. Yvonne would like to thank all those who contributed and supported in so many ways. Great fun was had by all.

• Hunting Huxtables! David Burrows has e-mailed the following: 'l read your newsletter with interest when the name Huxtable came to light. I am researching my family tree and have traced the family back to the Fremington, Holmacott, Barnstaple area.

  Richard Huxtable [1821] of Holmacott married Ann and they had at least six children, one of whom was John. He married Lydia [nee Mock] and had two children, Samuel and Charles. At this point they moved to Swansea and had a further five children. I am the great grandson of Alice Huxtable. I have traced the line back to 1769 but should be grateful if anyone can help me further.

A huge THANK YOU to all those people who contributed in so many ways to the World's Biggest Coffee Morning for Macmillan Cancer Relief in The Globe on 26th September - to the many people from Ilfracombe, Barnstaple, Combe Martin and the village who gave raffle prizes, bought Christmas cards and drank coffee. We raised over £250 and 41 people called in. The funds raised will go to the North Devon District Hospital's Macmillan Fund.

• Wine Circle

  A good BBQ was held at Tower Cottage, despite the fact that for a short time it came on to rain.

  Thanks to Keith Walls for fetching a table umbrella and Alan Rowlands for providing an extra and new gazebo, which with helping hands was quickly erected, prompting the rain to stop from that point on! Alex Parke, our Chairman, has arranged a repeat visit to Camel Valley Vineyard, near Bodmin, on Friday, 29th August, which is now fully subscribed, with over 30 members and friends wishing to participate.

  At the meeting on 2nd July, Malcolm Shepherd, Managing Director of Wessex Grain - an expert in bioethanol fuels - spoke on the topic "Transport Fuels from UK Cereals". He spoke about bioethanol production and of the help other governments were giving to encourage it. Wessex Grain are hopeful that through their continuous efforts at lobbying, etc., there could be a UK plant in the South West by 2005.

  After a break, the next meeting will be on Wednesday, 1st October, 7.15 p.m. at The Lantern. The subject will be "Hemp".

North Devon Voluntary Action Forum Starts Work!

The Forum, which was set up by community and voluntary sector groups at The Conference at The Landmark in October 2001 is starting its work with the appointment of Penny Jackson as Development Co-ordinator. The Forum will be working to support voluntary and community groups by providing training in North Devon, and by offering advice and support for groups to develop their capacity. It will assist groups to become organised in order to strengthen the sector as a whole in North Devon. This will enable participation by voluntary groups in the work of the community alliances. Voluntary groups who want to find out how they can be involved in their local alliance can contact the Forum for information [01271] 321413.

Studio Theatre, llfracombe College - Ilfracombe's Theatre group is offering the rip-roaring comedy, 'Allo, 'allo, at the Landmark Theatre on Thursday to Saturday, 22nd to 24th May, at 8.15 p.m. Tickets £7.00 [£5.50]. Written by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft, the play is based on the popular BBC series by the same authors. The play follows the adventures of Rene, the hapless café owner, in wartime France, as he and his wife, Edith, struggle to keep for themselves a priceless portrait hidden in a sausage in their cellar. Add to that a wireless disguised as a cockatoo and a rumour of an unexpected visit of the Fuhrer himself, and you have a recipe for hilarious misunderstandings. Woof, Woof! - Well done, dogs, give your owners a pat, your 'dumping' has improved! However, just one more little plea, ask them to take home the little 'parcels' and not leave them by the wayside. Thanks!

Was it Walden or a Stag? - The end of October has brought strange noises to the Sterridge Valley. Chris tells me that the bellicose sounds are stags rutting. Certainly, from delightful sightings of up to twenty-one deer, including at least one big stag opposite Cherry Tree and Hillside cottages, who am I to argue? However, Chris has been known to imitate owls regularly as a greeting call, so if it turns out to be him, apologies to the stag. Some say that the stag has tried to incorporate the flowerpot men into his herd and maybe this explains the damage lor abuse] inflicted on some of our terracotta friends in the past. Food for thought.

Tinkle - On leaving the smallest room in the house there was a faint chink or tinkle on porcelain. I took little notice until I suddenly realised that everything was blurred and reaching up to rub my glasses my finger went straight through the hole on the left side. "Oh heck, it must have gone down the U-know-wot! "

An examination of the drains followed - lifting the lid on the first manhole and holding a broom over the 'out' pipe, the IJ-K.W was flushed! No luck - nor was there any luck from manholes two and three. At the end of the road, or drains, the optician was the only option.

The next morning, what fell out of my pyjama pocket? You're right, the missing lens. It must have been the screw and not the lens at all that made that tinkling sound! Hastening back to the optician with the lens to be fitted, we all had a good laugh.

Wanted!

The BBC [Berry Broadcasting Company] is seeking help with their wardrobe department. After ten years, they have accumulated a considerable selection of costumes and accessories and are hoping that someone might come forward to act as custodian. Help with either listing, setting up a loan scheme or providing storage space would be extremely welcome. To assist with the costuming for their forthcoming new season, the company would be delighted to hear from anyone who could help with sewing, etc.

Get Well Wishes to everyone who has been or is in hospital, we hope you will be home again soon. Those wishes also go to anyone who has not been feeling too good. Our special wishes go to Betty and Les Parker [late of Higher Rows] as we understand that Betty has been unwell and in hospital.

Dogs for the Disabled Three of the Christmas Cards for Dogs for the Disabled this year have been designed by Debbie Cook. Fields

Rosslyn Hammett [nee Huxtable] recalls from her childhood at North Lee Farm that the fields her father farmed had names, and she wonders if those names still exist. There was, she says, Pugsleys Meadow, Pitt Meadow, Peter's Meadow [which was supposed to have a curse on it!], Alfie's Meadow, Dry Meadow, Little Oakland, Stoneage, Square Field, Long-close, Sheary field, Rosy Park and Lag. One of the fields behind the farmhouse was called Betsy's Field, where in early autumn you could always find mushrooms and where the two cart horses, Prince and Tidy, usually grazed. Does this jog a memory or two? If so, please let us know.

• Rural Reflections: Sadly, due to the ill health of his parents, Steve has not had the time to reflect recently. • Berrynarbor Men's Institute: The Institute began life in the early 1900's, meeting at that time in Bessemer Thatch before moving to the Institute Room at the Manor Hall. Today it takes the form of a snooker club for members from the Parish and new members are always welcome. It is open usually about 5 nights a week according to whether a 'Bar Man' is present - and Juniors may join at 16, becoming full members at 18. The annual subscription is currently £5.00.

  The proposed date of the AGM is Thursday, 26th September, for members only. However, if you live within the Parish of Berrynarbor and would like to join, please contact either the Chairman, Gordon Hughes [882580] or Secretary, John Huxtable [882402] who would be pleased to tell you more.

News from DCC - Barnstaple Library can now offer unabridged recorded books on CD's, or they may be ordered through other libraries.

The Council is making a new bid to reduce road accidents in North Devon by reducing the speed limit on some seven stretches of road from 40 mph to 30 mph [watch out on the approach road to Tesco's - it is now 30 mph!], mainly in Barnstaple but also on the A361 at Knowle and the A39 near Shirwell.

To be held at Shirwell Village Hall on 6th October 2001. On display will be the Millennium Project: Soldiers of the Great War 1914-1919, which covers fifty Parishes and three Market Towns in North Devon. It includes a Book on the Parish of Berrynarbor, which will be of interest to many people.




Cheshire Homes Cards

There will be NO Christmas Cards for me to sell this year. The Volunteer who has made these cards for many years now has family commitments which prevent her from continuing with the excellent work that she has done. I should like to thank everyone who has bought so many of these cards over the years for such a worthy cause.

Thank You - I should like to thank everyone who called to sec me on my 90th Birthday. It was lovely to see you and share a happy day. My home was filled with flowers and cards, and more teddy bears for my collection!

Sacked for Bad Language! - Did you hear about Percy, the Amazonian green pantomime parrot, who was sacked last year for shouting obscenities? Having learnt his lines to perfection, at a final dress rehearsal perched on Long John Silver's shoulder, he should have squawked 'pieces of eight', instead he shouted 'p. off mate'. Whilst the cast dissolved into giggles, he chanted 'b. . . .. off, b. . . .. off! A replacement had to be found at very short notice!

The Crop of Lupins - Richard Mabey in "The Flowering of Britain" 1980 wrote:

One new crop [an edible variety of the normally poisonous lupin] has been through the entire gamut that it is possible for a plant to play, beginning as a wildflower, then taken into gardens, escaping again as a naturalised 'weed' and now being deliberately grown as a source of vegetable protein.

It will be as fascinating to see how a field of lupin appears to us through this welter of associations as it will be to see which weeds turn out to be its close companions.

Welcome Visitors It was lovely to see Marion and Ray Bolton, on holiday from the Midlands, when they called to collect their Millennium Mugs, and it was good to see Ray looking so well following his accident last December.

Unwelcome Visitor! The female feline residents of Barton Lane are currently suffering from the unwanted attentions of what appears to be a stray ginger and white cat! Can anyone help, does anyone own him? If so, please ring me on 882901. If no one contacts me in the next couple of weeks, I shall try to rehome him.

Janet Knight - Cat Protection League

This Year's Crop Having watched with interest, over the last few years, what is being planted in the Smythen fields at the top of the Valley - swedes, blue flax and white flax - this year's crop is again different. The overall effect is pale lilac/pink and the smell is reminiscent of broad bean plants, but on closer inspection this is a variety of lupin. The growing of lupins, to supplement animal fodder, is a recent experiment and certainly this is a first in this part of the country.

The original Smythen Farm lay further down the hill and the remains of the outbuildings can be seen on the left as you go round the first sweeping bend. The later Smythen Farm, now the holiday complex, was the last farm to be built on the Watermouth Estate.

Traffic Notice: Please note that on Tuesday, 8th August, we are expecting delivery of a park home at Berrynarbor Park, approximately between 9.30 and 11.30 a.m. We apologise for any delays this may cause between Watermouth and the Park, particularly through 'two rocks' in the latter part of the journey.

Berry Revels Plant Stall - John's pleas for help with the plant stall, following the retirement of Bernard and Eunice, has borne fruit! This year Michael Lane, Vice-Chairman of the Manor Hall Management Committee, and Peter Hinchliffe will be doing their best to run the stall. The Revels will take place on Tuesday, 15th August. Will potential donators of plant6 please lay their plans and give any items to either of us nearer the event. All profits benefit the village, 60 please help us out!

STUDIO THEATRE Ilfracombe College will, by popular request, be restaging two performances of Larry Fabian's 'The First Noel' at The Landmark Theatre on Thursday and Friday, 4th and 5th May 2000 at 8.15 p.m. Friday matinee at 2.30 p.m.

Also during May and again at The Landmark Theatre, Young Studio Theatre are presenting 'Dracula Spectacula', Wednesday 17th to Friday 19th May, 7.30 p.m.

LOSS OF TELEVISION TRANSMISSION In the event of a loss of signal from the aerial in the village, your help in notifying the fact would be appreciated. Please either ring Len Coleman, Chairman of the Parish Council, or report the matter to the BBC on 01752029201 or West Country [Carlton] on 324244.

VILLAGE NEBULISER During 1998 the Village raised money to buy 2 nebulisers, one of which stayed in the village for use by asthma sufferers. This has remained in my cupboard ever since it was delivered! Recently, while attending the asthma clinic with my children I discussed the use of home nebulisation with the specialist nurse who informed me that the current opinion is that if nebulisation is necessary, then the patient needs to be seen by a doctor, therefore rendering the nebuliser here useless and I expect the response from other surgeries would be the same.

In the 18 months I have 'housed' the nebuliser I have not been approached to loan it to anyone, and J feel that it is a waste of an expensive piece of equipment for which people kindly donated money.

I feel it would be more beneficial if it was donated [or loaned] to a local medical centre or hospital, but this is not a decision I can make so I should welcome any ideas or feedback from villagers. Please contact me on 883484, Nicola Cornish, Breezes, Barton Lane.

BERRYNARBOR TODDLERS Calling all owners of toddlers and/or babies! We should very much like to restart our Friday morning Toddler Group. We have a lovely big hall with lots of great toys to play with and coffee and biscuits for mums/grannies, etc. If you are interested, please ring Julia on 882783.

BERRYNARBOR PRE-SCHOOL would like to say a big 'thank you' to the Millennium Committee who very kindly donated £50 to the Pre-School. The money will be spent on a new carpet.

BERRY IN BLOOM The Jumble sale on 11th March for Berry in Bloom and the Carnival Float was very successful, raising the sum of £123. We should like to say 'thank you' to all who helped and contributed. We shall be having a planting up afternoon sometime in June and look forward to an army of voluntary helpers, as last year - but more about this in the next Newsletter.

BEST KEPT VILLAGE we have again entered this competition and everyone is asked to do their bit if we are to keep up our excellent record. Two reminders: dog owners, please remember to 'scoop the poop' or exercise your pooch in the field designated for this purpose. Recently there seems to have been rather a build-up of mess! Secondly, when clearing away the winter debris to tidy up, a plea to pyromaniacs! If you REALLY must have a bonfire, please give some thought to your neighbours and keep your fire raising to the evenings so that we can enjoy being in our gardens, especially on sunny days. Burn your sticks after half-six! [The legal time for bonfires] Thank you.

Congratulations - to Michael Wyer, son of our Rector Keith, who has been awarded a Double First Class Honours degree in Maths and Computer Science from Imperial College. Also, to Francis Baddick, who had a good start to the new school year when he was presented with the Andrew Neale Trophy at Ilfracombe College's Presentation Evening at The Landmark Theatre in September. Francis received the trophy, presented in memory of Andrew who loved all sports, for his interest and enthusiasm for sport and in particular Cross-Country Running.

Get Well - It is good to report that Jack Elliott of Goosewell is progressing well following his heart by-pass operation at the end of the summer, but put that spade down, Jack! Our best wishes to anyone not feeling too good at present - get well soon.

Doris the Duck Returns Home - After a lovely summer holiday break, Doris and her family have returned home to the peaceful haven of Rose Cottage. Pitch fees have been duly paid in full -- pint of lager in The Globe - but Doris did feel that the level of care, particularly food, was down on previous years! She has declined the kind invitation to spend her Christmas holiday there, having heard the rumour that it may be hot and sticky around Christmas Eve. Is this true Brian?

Charity Events - The Post Office sponsored two successful Charity Events in October. Hot on its heels came a White Teddy Bear raffle for the Children's Hospice. £30.00 was donated and Ivy White was very happy to receive the bear, 'Paula', for her granddaughter.

It is good to know that Mr. Homer of Little Sanctuary is now home again, recovering from his operation, and Val Hann from Crofts Lea is around and about again following an operation on her leg. We hope that Kathleen and Tom Tucker are on the mend and look forward to seeing you in the village soon. Pride comes before a fall, they say, but we were so sorry to hear that Phil [our hole-in-one golfer] had had a nasty fall in Ilfracombe and hope she is feeling less bruised now!

Happy Birthday - Congratulations to Robbie who celebrated her 91st birthday at the end of April and Una who will be 96 on the 31st May. Vi Goodman was 80 years young on the 16th May and we wish her many happy returns. Vi would like to thank everyone for the very many cards and messages she received to celebrate her special day.

Congratulations! - Rolls Royce Award for Innovation & Technology: Tony Rowlands, eldest son of Alan and Nora, has received a major award in recognition of his design innovation: to sweep back the paddle-like blades of aero-engines and thus increase efficiency and thrust. Now fully developed, the blades are a major factor in making the RR Trent the world's most powerful aero-engine.

Problems with Quality of TV Reception - Welsh TV transmitters have recently changed transmissions to digital and the new frequency is very close to the frequency currently used for TV reception in Berrynarbor. This has resulted in interference. If anyone is currently experiencing problems, please ring the TV Transmitter Adjustment Programme' s Customer Services on Freephone 0800 092 1044. The TV TAP needs to hear from everyone who is experiencing the problem so that they can establish its extent.

Parish and District Council Elections - As the required nominations for the Parish Council had been received, no election was necessary. Our Parish Councillors, under the Chairmanship of Len Coleman, are Ray Ludlow [Vice-Chairman], Bobby Bowden, Paul Crockett, Richard Gingell, Anne Hinchliffe, Mary Malin, Bud Rice and Matthew Walls. As reported in the last issue, Graham Andrews has resigned and it was with much sadness that we learned that Lorna Bowden, after many years on the Council looking after our interests, has also stood down. We thank them both for their support of and commitment to the village.

Representing us for a further term of office on the North Devon District Council are Yvette Gubb and Peter Spencer.

Election Thanks - I should like to thank everyone in Berrynarbor who supported me in the recent District Council election. Although not successful, this time, it was a close run result which promises well for the future! I should also like to thank all Committee members, family and friends who worked so hard on my behalf.

To Jenny, daughter of Tony and Marilyn Mascall, who must be the BBC's No. 1 fan! Jenny is a regular follower of 'Our Show', getting up at 4.00 a.m. to go to work and coming straight down from Corby in Northants to be here in time for when the curtain goes up. However, Natasha [Rozhdestvenka], our 'Honey Man's sister, claimed to have come the furthest - she lives in Moscow!

Thanks - Mr. and Mrs. Woodley of King Street, Combe Martin, would like to thank Alex Wigmore, his wife and his workmen for coming to the rescue when their large window was vandalised early one Sunday morning - within 24 hours all was back to normal. Small businesses, like these, are needed because without the help from Alex [and the Police], matters would have been far worse. Thank you all.

Return Visit - After a longish absence, it was lovely to have Tom and Kathleen Tucker and Audrey visiting the village again recently - and especially good to see Audrey out and about again after her recent problems.

Crossword Corner - Crossword puzzlers will be very sorry to learn that Dave Beagley's supply of Puzzles is now exhausted! We shall miss them, Dave, and thank you for your many contributions and we shall live in hope for more sometime.

John is at present on the Ohio Internship Programme training and studying on a golf course with the greens staff at Atlanta, Georgia, sponsored by the University of Ohio. He is studying golf course maintenance and construction and preparing for a PGA tournament in October.

• Spanish - The Spanish class suggested in the last Newsletter has got underway, the first meeting being held in the Penn Curzon room at the Manor Hall on Thursday, 17th September. Where are they now?

Sadly, the request from Hilppa Loikkanen from Finland for news of her mother, Jon Marjorie Nyholm, and her half-sister, Sarah Lindsay, has had no result. On her behalf, one final plea to anyone who can help to contact Judie on 883544.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Mr. and Mrs. Pugsley from Kingsteignton, frequent visitors to North Devon. Mr. Pugsley's mother was born in Berrynarbor but sadly he has no other information. Does anyone have any recollection of the Galliford family, and Phyllis who was born here in 1902? [I believe the family later moved to the North Molton area.] If you can help, please again ring me on 883544.

Special Constables

There is a current need for Special Constables and if anyone feels they could help or would like more information, please contact Ilfracombe Police Station.

Spanish Classes

Is anyone interested in Spanish Conversation classes over the winter months? If sufficient people are interested, it is intended to run the classes in Berrynarbor on a weekly basis. The emphasis would be on pronunciation and speech but with sufficient grammar and vocabulary to give the ability to speak and understand sufficient Spanish to add a little extra to a Spanish holiday. If the interest is maintained, classes would continue each winter to allow students to improve to whatever level suits them.

Post Office Christmas Raffle - Thanks to everyone who participated in the raffle the £115 raised being donated to the Salvation Army and Macmillan Nurses, both of whom have sent letters expressing their appreciation. The 35-year-old bottle of Port [donated by Vi Kingdon] was won by Tom who is now awaiting the appropriate occasion on which to open it! The cake, providing a nice welcome to the village was won by Colin and Wendy of Bessemer Thatch, and the poinsettia by Carol at Tree Tops.

Get Well - Get well wishes to everyone who has not been well just recently - we hope you will be feeling better soon.

Twinning Invitation - 1st - 4th May - Bernadette Richards [evenings - 882221] or Jill Sidebottom [evenings 882337] would welcome enquiries about the 20th Anniversary visit to Cormelles Le Royal, Normandy. The fare, coach and ferry, will be about £60 and accommodation is with host families. A few words of French is helpful but not essential. The fare includes travel insurance and the French Committee meet any sight-seeing group expenses. It is courteous to take English-made gifts to one's hosts. Because of the particular anniversary, it promises to be another very enjoyable visit.

Last issue's front cover line drawing of the village by Peter Rothwell has caught the attention of the Community Council of Devon at County Hall, who have asked to use it within the text of their Annual Report. Well done, Peter, you're putting us on the map!

Congratulations to Sharon Toye who has gained a First Class Honours degree in Social History from the University of Exeter.

From Thursday, 14th September, the Community Department of the College will be running a term's Waterpainting class under the direction of Della Riley. Anyone interested should enrol through the College. The informal Thursday evening Painting Group will start again after Christmas.

Lammas Day, as shown in the Calendar, is on the 1st August. The word Lammas is the medieval form of the Anglo-Saxon Loaf Mass. This was a religious ceremony during which a loaf of bread made from flour derived from the first-ripened wheat of the season, together with a sheaf of that wheat, was consecrated. Though now a religious ceremony, it undoubtedly originated in pre-Christian times when seed-time and harvest were recurrent mysterious features of the community's life and vaguely associated in the communal mind with fertility rites and the worship of the life-giving sun. Inevitably it later came to be associated with the institution of the Harvest Festival, the older name for which was Festival of First Fruits.

Goodbye and Hello! Farewells have sadly been made to Rita and David Duncan and family who have returned north to Yorkshire, but we extend a warm welcome to the Parkers who have moved from Ilfracombe, and also moving in from Ilfracombe are Sally and John Baddick and their daughters, Kirsten and Hannah. Many will already be familiar with Sally through her very successful Demi Dance School and John, an avid motor-cyclist, is in the Police Force, stationed at Ilfracombe. A warm welcome, too, to Alan and Pat Robinson and their daughter, Eleasha.

We hope you will all be very happy here in Berrynarbor.

Congratulations to Elaine Gubb on successfully completing, as part of the Ilfracombe College team, the gruelling Ten Tors 45 mile expedition. Elaine completed the 35 mile expedition two years ago.

Good Luck to all students from the Village who are either about to start, or have already started, their 'A' Level and G. C. S.E. examinations, and those university undergrads taking their end of year or Finals exams.

Badminton Club has now finished for the summer. The Club will recommence on Monday, 4th September.

Happy Birthday and very best wishes to Bobbie Hacker on making it FOUR score years and ten!

Sincere Thanks to Joy Morrow who, after ten years, has stood down from the Manor Hall Management committee. Joy has done so much for our village and her keen interest in the Parish properties and organising skills for so many events will be missed. Thank you, Joy.

Farewell and Welcome - Having been in a state of flux for some time, sadly Steve and Margaret King have now finally left the village, returning to their earlier haunts of West Sussex. We wish them and their family all the very best and look forward to return visits soon.

Get Well Wishes - Bett Brooks is now well on the way to full recovery after a spell in hospital. She would like to say: "Thank you to everyone who visited me while in hospital and since I have been home, for all the cards, presents and good wishes." Win White is home again having spent five weeks in hospital following a fall in which she broke her hip. She, too, is progressing well. Also in hospital are Mrs. Melhuish [Newberry Farm, late of The Haven] and Grace Slade, who has had a hip replacement op in Bristol. Get well soon. If you saw Pete Newell on the stage recently, you might be forgiven for thinking he'd been "swinging the lead". It is great to see you back in action, Pete, and in fine form when "Berry Went to Sea".

A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped make the Valentine's Day Lunch so successful. £285.00 was raised on the day and an additional £80 given in memory of Eva Morrow made a total of £365 to be donated to Cancer Research. The appeal target is £12 million, of which £3 million has already been raised. The building of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Research Centre in Liverpool will begin this summer. Refuse Collection - Changes are being made in the refuse collection service in the area. Our day of Wednesday remains unaltered, but the time may change.

Over the next few weeks the new schedule should settle down and from then on the collection time should remain constant. However, for the time being, we are advised to make sure that sacks are out ready for collection by 8.00 a.m.

Both have recently passed their two-year probationary period and will be taking the first part of their Sergeant's examinations in March. The Primary School would like to thank everyone who participated in the W.H. Smith's book scheme. The target of 5,000 vouchers was hard to reach, but by joining forces with some of the other primary schools in the area, they will be able to share the £500 of books.

There will be a Save a Life class in the Manor Hall on Wednesday, 20th October, at 2.30 p.m. The session will last about 1.5 hours and will give the basics for possibly saving a life. MORE OF THIS AND THAT...

The Primary School is participating in the W.H. Smith's scheme designed to boost schools' book stocks. A voucher is issued for every £2 spent in any of their stores [a sale of £10 would receive 5 vouchers] and the aim is to collect 5,000 - enough to get £500 worth of books for our school. The scheme, already in operation, will run until the 18th September. Whether you still have children in our school or not, PLEASE support them by collecting the vouchers and handing them in to David Chaplin or other members of staff or pupils.

Thank you I should like to thank so many friends of the Village who sent me cards and gave me flowers on my retirement from the Medical Centre in Ilfracombe. May I say a big THANK YOU for the lovely, surprise cake, so much enjoyed by my colleagues and the family, who came home to join in the celebrations.

South Molton Recycle Steve Portsmouth reports that our Recycling Pavilion is doing well. Generally speaking, glass bottles and newspapers make up the most weight, but it is the newspaper input that yields a good performance. He thanks us for our support and for showing that as a community we are concerned about the environment and care about the future our children will inherit.

Farewell and Welcome It was sad to say good-bye to Sylvia and Nick Cataldo [and Kim and Sam - he who used to relax in the middle of the road!] after a brief sojourn in Berrynarbor, but we extend a warm welcome to Mavis and Mishel Pesic who have moved to "Hollyhocks" from Bideford.

Congratulations to Una Warburton on the special occasion of her 90th birthday. She celebrated with husband, Stan - also a nonagenarian - and family at Bessemer Thatch. Una still attends keep fit classes which she calls her "stretch and sweat" sessions, and her love of animals, especially cats, has led her to 'adopt' not only one of her own, but so many more on her daily walks around the Village. North Devon Hospice Care Trust David Walden's Charity Walk [which was in fact 260 miles] raised the grand total sum of £2,740. Well done, David!

CLIC Betty Blackmore, through her recent Dancing Shows, raised the sum of nearly £l 200 for Cancer & Leukaemia in Children.

Bartlett's Abroad After two years at the North Devon College and a further two years at Plymouth Polytechnic working for his Diploma in Graphic Design, Roland is now off to join his sister, Angela, in Singapore, where she - also a graphic designer - is now Graphic Design Director for a pharmaceutical company. Roland hopes to follow in her footsteps! Caroline is somewhere cruising the world - anywhere between Alaska and the South Pole! Following her training in Beauty Therapy, she is taking six months off to act as a cocktail waitress on a round-world cruise liner. Good luck and best wishes to you all.

Noster Annus Mirabilis For those of you who, like me, have an aversion to round robin letters, this letter puts it in a nutshell!

SIR- Can it be the recession and the price of cards? This year we have received even more of those photocopied "Round Robin" letters which people send their friends at Christmas, gleefully enumerating their successes.

The recipient, aware of his own dull and uneventful life, is left with little joy and only the consolation of spotting spelling and grammatical errors. So this year we are taking our revenge, and would be grateful if you would publish the following:

"Dear All,

This year has once again been extremely enjoyable and successful for all of us. Our eldest daughter has been travelling the world with her husband in the various exotic locations to which he has been sent as a senior executive for a multi-national company, enjoying much first class air travel and company limousines.

"Our son has traded in his Porsche for a Ferrari and is learning to fly a helicopter in his spare time from his creative job in advertising. He is currently considering offers from two head hunters.

"Our youngest daughter, who has won innumerable student prizes, is doing a PhD, following her first class honours degree, before settling down. She particulary enjoyed her sponsored trips to Russia and Madagascar.

"My wife and I have also had a busy year. Following my early retirement on a more than generous pension, I have decided against accepting various offers of directorships so that I can concentrate more time enjoying the yacht I purchased at last year's boat show.


 

"The stablilisers that I had fitted to it seem to have been successful in reducing my wife's tendency to sea sickness. This has meant that she has at last been able to fulfill her ambition to cruise to Monte Carlo to watch the Monaco Grand Prix.

"This year we have decided to spend Christmas in Switzerland, and, as a bit of extra fun, are asking Fortnum and Mason to send out a specially prepared swan that the hotel has agreed to cook for our Christmas meal. After a bit of skiing we are all off to the Galapagos, prior to returning to face the remnants of an English winter.

"That's about all for this year, friends. Perhaps we shall meet up with some of you at Ascot in the coming year? Anyway, we all hope you enjoy 1993, however mundane it may be for you."

The sympathy of the whole village goes to those who were effected by the recent floods. A terrible experience and it is hoped that something can be done to ensure that it doesn't happen again.

Household Tip Use the grill at the top rear side of your freezer as a place to store butter in the winter. The warmth from the heat exchanger is just right for spreadable butter. This grill is also good for standing a bottle of red wine to bring it to room temperature.

A Talk and Tasting of wines of the Loire, Chinon and Touraine region by Mr. P. F. Lovelock of West Country Wine Importers will be held on Wednesday, 17th March. Contribution £3.00.

Both meetings will be in the Manor Hall at 8.00 p.m. and the group is open to all who love good wine and good food.

ORCHARDS

A poster in the Poet Office advertising an "Apple Day" at Rosemoor Gardens, Torrington, set me thinking about the old orchards that have all but disappeared from Berry.

Not so very long ago, every farm would have had its orchard and every cottage its apple trees. It would be interesting to discover how many orchards remain and what kind of fruit trees are still growing there.

Everyone who went to Berrynarbor School perhaps 10 or 20 years ago [I'm not sure when the last one was felled], would have played around, up or under three very old apple trees, in the bottom playground [or school garden if you are coming up 60!].

One was a Tom Pots [or Pits in other part of Devon] ; another was a "Norood" or North Wood to those of us without the true dialect. The third was the Devonshire Quarenden, "known before 1650 and possibly French in origin. It has a deep crimson fruit, with a white juicy flesh". These three old trees were part of an old orchard called The Splatchet, which ran down the valley to Peter's Meadow, on the left-hand bank of the stream. Some old trees still grow here, gnarled and propped up but still bearing fruit.

If they could talk, perhaps they would tell us of the ancient ceremony of Wassailing, which took place on Old or New Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve. It was the custom to appease the Spirit of the tree by anointing the roots with cider and placing toast and wheat cakes or roast apples in the branches. This would encourage the tree to produce a bumper crop the next year. To ensure this, people would chase away evil spirits by shouting, banging on pots and pans and shooting guns into the branches.

In spite of their efforts, they knew the trees might still be in danger on Franklin's Night or Francimass, the 17th, 18th and 19th of May [in some places the 19th, 20th and 21st], which are always cold and frosty - the Devil's attempt to destroy the blossom.

Another old orchard was located in the area of Helen Armstead's garden. It was around here that the Rev. Churchill's brother died suddenly whilst they were out rabbiting. A stone memorial was placed where he died. I wonder if it's still there?

My favourite old orchard has disappeared. As children, North Lee was our adventure playground. The overgrown orchard, the old track round the "bridge", the old leat, the moostidge [I don't know how it's spelt] , the cartlinhay and stables with their pallets and the shippens provided a wealth of hiding places for games like Pip, Squeak or 'olly - a local version of hide and seek. Bessie Huxtable, bless her heart, less than five feet tall and having to run the farm herself because of her husband's long, serious illness, never once grumbled at us or sent us away. Sadly, all that's left of this little piece of history is half of one wall of the old cartlinhay.

Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to funds: via the collecting box in the Post Office or as payment for advertising in the Newsletter. The account is currently quite healthy, but towards the summer a strawberry and cream tea or coffee morning might have to be on the cards!

CONGRATULATIONS to Mark Hinchliffe of Castle Hill who will be marrying Fiona Wyatt from Ilfracombe at St. Peter's Church on Saturday, 5th December - his birthday! Many happy returns, Mark, and best wishes to you both for your future happiness together.

DID YOU KNOW that as an experiment, British Telecom are charging ALL calls (except international calls) at local rates each Sunday, from 3.00 p.m. to midnight until Sunday, 27th December? Phone those far-flung members of the family on Sundays!!

BELATED CONGRATULATIONS to Mark Greenslade of Barton Lane who obtained an A grade in Law at 'A' Level and is now studying for a Law Degree at Anglia University.

It was sad to see the demise of the three, large ash trees on the public footpath across the corner from Rectory Hill to the Valley, but it is understood that they were no longer safe. I wonder what tales those trees could have told! However, it is good to see work being carried out on the steps to the Church and to know that the cobbles are being repaired and replaced.

GET WELL WISHES to Ivy Richards and Kathleen Richards who have both recently had brief spells in hospital.

It is algo good to know that Margaret Kemp is back home again after four weeks in four different hospitals. We hope the injury to her back continues to improve. Margaret writes:

"May I say a sincere thank you to all my many friends in Berrynarbor for their great kindness following my unfortunate accident in Scarborough. I received so many cards, letters and gifts, and on my return to Ilfracombe so many enquiries and visits - I was quite overwheImed . You all helped me keep cheerful, especially whilst I was in Scarborough, where the postman's daily visit brought me much delight. I am getting better and hope before long to be as good as new. "

• RETIREMENT Happy retirement wishes to Lorna Bowden who has retired from teaching, having taught at Combe Martin Primary School for the last 20 years. However, Lorna is not putting her feet up yet and has taken up part-time work of a different nature for the summer season.


• GOOD LUCK! Good luck and best wishes to all students from the village who are taking G.C.S.E., 'AS' or 'A' Level examinations over next few weeks.

Who went for an "Autumn Break" holiday and broke her wrist!? Glad to know, PP of DC, that it is well on the mend.

And who gave everybody, especially his family and fiancee, an awful shock when he was blown off the roof he was repairing? We are delighted, Richard, that you are now fit and well again and ready [?] to return to work.

We are delighted to report that as a result of his 'A' Levels, Alan Froud is at Plymouth Polytechnic studying for an HND in Electrical and Electronic Engineering [and not at the N.D. College as stated in the October Newsletter]. At the same time, our best wishes for a speedy recovery go to mum, Dorothy; who has had a short spell in hospital. [A change for you. to be 'nursed' Dorothy!]

Best Kept Village Once again we have reached the finals. Thanks to all who do their 'bit' to keep it so nice. Let's hope we can go one better this year, and make it a FIRST!

Sunday School The outing on Sunday, 15th July, was to Watermouth Castle and what a wonderful time they had - panning for gold, down in the dungeons, waffles and tea and lots of fun in the music room. They would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Haines and their staff for making the visit so memorable and such fun.

Congratulations to Ivan and Bill Huxtable of Woolscott Farm who are justifiably proud to have sold a small herd of 10 cattle [8 Devons] to Mr. Thomas of Brightley Barton, Umberleigh, who was the Champion Cattle Judge at the Royal Smithfield Show.
